How to Layer and Decorate a Burn-Away Cake

How to Layer and Decorate a Burn-Away Cake

What is a Burn-Away Cake?

A burn-away cake features two layers of edible images: a top layer made from wafer paper that burns away to reveal a hidden icing sheet image underneath. It’s a unique and captivating way to surprise guests and add flair to your cake design. Follow these instructions to create your perfect burn away cake.

These instructions can be used with our wafer and icing burn away cake set

1. Safety First!

Before you begin, take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe experience:

  • Use a lighter or long matches for ignition.
  • Consider a fireproof tray or non-flammable cake stand (optional but recommended).
  • Work in a safe, controlled environment free from flammable materials.
  • If indoors, ensure adequate space around the cake for airflow and safety.
  • If outdoors, choose an open, well-ventilated area away from curtains, decorations, or other flammable items.

2. Prepare the Cake

  • Apply Base Decoration: Cover the cake with your chosen base layer, such as buttercream, fondant, or ganache.
  • Smooth the top to create an even surface for the icing image.

3. Place the Icing Image

  1. Prepare the Icing Image: Cut the icing image to your desired shape.
  2. Position the Image: Gently place the icing image on the flat, decorated top surface of the cake. Smooth it lightly with your fingers or a cake smoother to adhere it to the icing.

4. Pipe a Sturdy Icing Border Around the Edge of the Cake

  1. Choose a Sturdy Icing: Use a firm buttercream, royal icing, or similar frosting that holds its shape.
  2. Pipe the Border:
    • Pipe a consistent border around the edge of the cake where the icing image ends.
    • Ensure the border is tall enough (at least 1.5 inches) to provide a stable base for the wafer paper layer.

5. Place the Wafer Paper Above the Icing Border

  1. Prepare the Wafer Paper: Cut the wafer paper to your desired shape.
  2. Position the Wafer Paper:
    • Carefully place the wafer paper on top of the piped icing border, ensuring it sits securely.
    • Maintain at least 1.5 inches (4 cm) of height between the wafer paper and the icing image.
    • Check for even spacing around the edges for a balanced look.

6. Pipe Another Border Around the Edge of the Wafer Paper

  1. Create the Top Border: Using the same or a contrasting icing, pipe a decorative border along the edge of the wafer paper.
    • This adds a finished look and ensures the wafer paper remains secure.
    • Optional: Add none flammable edible pearls, sprinkles, or other accents for additional flair.

7. Burn your Burn Away Cake Topper

  • Place the long lit matchstick in the center of the cake, once lit stand back and watch your wafer image burn away to reveal the lower image.
  • Allow the topper to burn completely; it will naturally extinguish once finished.
  • Do not leave the topper unattended during the burning process.

Post-Effect Cleanup

Once the burn-away topper has been used, follow these steps to clean up:

Dispose of Residue

    • After the topper has cooled, carefully remove any remaining ash or debris from the cake using tongs or a small brush.
    • Ensure no burnt fragments are left on the edible parts of the cake to keep it safe for consumption.

By following these instructions, you can create a beautifully layered burn-away cake that’s both safe and visually stunning!
